dc.description.abstract**Abstract** AFF 601: Introduction to Agroforestry provides a foundational understanding of agroforestry as an integrated and holistic approach to sustainable land-use management that combines trees, crops, and livestock to enhance productivity, environmental sustainability, and community well-being. The instructional materials introduce the fundamental concepts, history, components, benefits, and major practices of agroforestry, emphasizing the ecological, economic, and social contributions of integrated production systems. The course examines the attributes and functional roles of trees, crops, and livestock, including their interactions in relation to resource use, soil and water conservation, biodiversity, climate-change mitigation, food security, and income diversification. Major agroforestry practices and cropping systems, including alley cropping, silvopastoral systems, agri-silvopastoral systems, shade-grown systems, windbreaks, farmer-managed natural regeneration, home gardens, mixed cropping, intercropping, and crop rotation, are also explored. The course further develops students’ capacity to design context-responsive agroforestry systems through the principles of farmer-centeredness, synergy, and aptness to place, people, and purpose. Emphasis is placed on integrating scientific and local knowledge, considering ecological and socio-economic conditions, and assessing feasibility, adaptability, and sustainability. Through conceptual analysis, design activities, case scenarios, and applied exercises, students are prepared to develop agroforestry systems that are productive, resilient, inclusive, and responsive to community needs.
