Chem 602: Biochemistry lecture

Abstract

This instructional material was developed to support the teaching and learning of Biochemistry using an outcomes-based approach. It serves as a guide for students in understanding the fundamental concepts of biochemistry. The course covers the structure, properties, functions, and biological significance of major biomolecules, including carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, amino acids, enzymes, and nucleic acids. It also introduces the major biochemical pathways that regulate cellular processes and metabolism, providing students with a strong foundation in the molecular basis of life. Relevant examples and recent developments in biochemistry are incorporated to demonstrate the application of biochemical principles to environmental, biological, and health-related fields. The contents of this instructional material are aligned with the intended course outcomes. By the end of the course, students are expected to identify the structure, function, and importance of biomolecules; explain the relationships among biochemical pathways; demonstrate essential techniques in handling biomolecules; and apply recent advances in biochemistry to real-world situations. Each lesson includes discussions, illustrations, and learning activities designed to promote critical thinking, scientific inquiry, and meaningful learning. It is hoped that this instructional material will serve as a useful resource for both students and instructors in achieving the desired learning outcomes.
