Bio 601: General botany lecture

Abstract

Plants are indispensable to life, serving as the primary producers that sustain ecosystems and support human well-being. A fundamental understanding of plant biology is therefore essential for students pursuing studies in the biological sciences and related fields. This General Botany Module is designed to provide students with a solid foundation in the study of plants by integrating fundamental concepts with practical laboratory experiences. The lessons explore the diversity of the plant kingdom, plant structure and function, growth and development, reproduction, genetics, evolution, ecology, and the interactions between plants and their environment. Complementary laboratory activities encourage students to develop scientific skills through observation, experimentation, data analysis, and critical thinking. This module aims to promote active learning and inquiry while reinforcing the principles discussed in class. By engaging with both theoretical concepts and hands-on investigations, students will gain a deeper appreciation of the importance of plants in sustaining life and addressing environmental challenges.
