Understanding learners' development is an essential foundation in creating effective and meaningful learning experiences. Learners enter the classroom with diverse cognitive abilities, emotional experiences, social backgrounds, and personal characteristics that influence how they think, behave, and acquire knowledge. This module provides an exploration of different theories that explain how learners develop and how these theories can guide teachers in designing appropriate instructional strategies that respond to learners' needs. By understanding the nature of learner development, future educators can create supportive environments where students are encouraged to participate actively and achieve their full potential. This module introduces major theories that explain the different dimensions of learners' growth and behavior. The Cognitive Learning Theory highlights the importance of mental processes involved in acquiring, organizing, storing, and applying knowledge. It explains that learning occurs when students actively process information, connect new ideas with prior experiences, and engage in meaningful thinking activities. Through this perspective, teachers are guided to develop strategies that enhance learners' understanding, problem-solving abilities, and critical thinking skills. The module also discusses the Social Learning Theory, which emphasizes the influence of observation, interaction, modeling, and the learning environment on learners' behaviors and skills. Learners do not develop in isolation; rather, they acquire knowledge and attitudes through their experiences with teachers, peers, and society. In addition, the Psychosexual Learning Theory provides insights into how early experiences and developmental stages contribute to personality formation, emotional responses, and individual behavior. These theories help teachers recognize that learners' actions are shaped by multiple developmental factors. As future educators, understanding theories of learner development enables teachers to become more responsive, reflective, and inclusive in their practice. These theories serve as guides in identifying learners' needs, recognizing individual differences, and creating learning experiences that promote holistic development. (Davao del Sur State College, 2026)Welcome to Principles and Strategies in Teaching Mathematics, a course designed to equip preservice and practicing mathematics teachers with pedagogical knowledge, instructional skills, and reflective practices necessary to facilitate meaningful and effective mathematics learning. As mathematics education continues to evolve in response to technological advancements, educational research, and the diverse needs of learners, teachers are expected to employ innovative, evidencebased, and learner-centered approaches that promote critical thinking, problem-solving, collaboration, and lifelong learning. This coursepack presents a comprehensive exploration of the fundamental principles and contemporary strategies that guide effective mathematics instruction. It examines current trends and research in mathematics education, the principles of constructivism, cooperative learning, inquirybased and research-based teaching, direct and indirect instruction, reflective teaching, flipped classroom pedagogy, and the development of effective learning plans. The coursepack also discusses instructional frameworks such as Edgar Dale's Cone of Experience, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Guiding Principles, and the Philippine K-12 Mathematics Curriculum, providing a strong theoretical and practical foundation for designing engaging, inclusive, and outcomes-based mathematics lessons. Throughout this course, emphasis is placed on the teacher's role as a facilitator of learning who creates classroom environments that encourage active participation, meaningful discourse, collaboration, creativity, and reflective practice. Each lesson in this coursepack integrates current educational theories with practical classroom applications to help future mathematics teachers make informed instructional decisions that respond to the diverse needs, interests, and abilities of learners. Learners are likewise encouraged to critically evaluate instructional practices, utilize educational technologies effectively, and continuously reflect on their professional growth to improve teaching effectiveness. This coursepack has been developed to serve as a valuable learning resource for students enrolled in Principles and Strategies in Teaching Mathematics. It is intended to support the development of competent, innovative, and reflective mathematics educators who are committed excellence in teaching and lifelong professional learning.
