Item Estimation of potato (Solanum tuberosum) evapotranspiration using blaney-criddle method in Sitio Gagpang, Brgy. Alegre, Bansalan, Davao del SurDico, Joshua Cedrick (Davao del Sur State College, 2024-01)This research study aimed to estimate potato (Solanum tuberosum) evapotranspiration using the Blaney-Criddle method in Sitio Gagpang, Brgy. Alegre, Bansalan, Davao del Sur. The study collected temperature data from February to April 2022 and computed the reference evapotranspiration (ETo) and crop evapotranspiration (ETc) across different growth stages of the potato crop. Results show that the mean monthly temperature in the study area is suitable for potato planting, falling within the range of 15 to 20 C. The study also found that potato plants require significant water, and the computed ETo values of 5 mm/day, 4.98 mm/day, and 5.1 mm/day were within the range of water requirements for potato cultivation. Furthermore, the ETc of the potato crop varied across its growth stages, with the highest ETc in the reproductive stage. The findings can guide farmers in managing their irrigation practices and maximizing crop yields. Future studies may continue the investigation to the months beyond April or explore other irrigation systems that could be implemented in the study area. Overall, this study provides valuable information on potato crop evapotranspiration rates in Sitio Gagpang, Brgy. Alegre, Bansalan, Davao del Sur, and can aid in improving potato farming practices in the study area.Item Growth performance of pechay ( Brassica chinensis) in the fabricated growing media for hydroponic system using different combinations of dried banana leaves and coconut coirOrbita, Fernando M., Jr. (Davao del Sur State College, 2024-05)Hydroponics is a practice that involves plant propagation in a nutrient-filled solution rather than soil, it is an agricultural approach for producing more with less. Growing media is important for seed germination, seedling development, and seedling growth. However, production cost is rather expensive due to the higher cost of commercially available growing media. This study entitled, "Growth Performance of Pechay (Brassica chinensis) in the Fabricated Growing Media for Hydroponic System Using Different Combinations of Dried Banana Leaves and Coconut Coir" was conducted utilizing banana leaves and coco coir as a potential growing media for pechay in a hydroponic system. The study was carried-out using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with four (4) treatments replicated three (3) times. T1 (control-hydroponic foam), T2 (25% coco coir and 75% banana leaves), T3 (50% coco coir and 50% banana leaves), and T4 (75% coco coir and 25% banana leaves). The data gathered were evaluated with One-Way Analysis of Variance at the level of 5%, and the least significant difference (LSD) test was additionally utilized to determine the difference between treatments. The results revealed that there was a significant difference in terms of bulk density with a P-value of 0.0000, and in terms of yield of T2 in the yield of T1 and T3 with a P-value of 0.0191. It also revealed that the treatments had no significant difference in terms of water holding capacity, length of roots, plant height, and number of leaves with a P-value of 0.2681, 0.2075, 0.0948, and 0.0692 respectively. The results of the cost per unit production showed that the prices of the fabricated growing media were much lower than the hydroponic foam. Supported by the result of the benefit/cost ratio, it was revealed that utilizing T3 as a growing media for pechay could be beneficial since it has a higher BCR than Treatment 1. This concluded that the fabricated growing media with a balanced concentration of banana leaves and coco coir could be on par with the commercialized hydroponic foam.Item Indigenous farming practices in selected barangays of Sta. Cruz, Davao del SurAdo, Mariel Abe (Davao del Sur State College, 2024-05)The purpose of this research was to determine the indigenous farming practices of IP's in selected Barangays of Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur using descriptive analysis. Most indigenous farmers were middle-aged, between the ages of 36 and 50 years old, no formal Education and with small family size, and are generally Bagobo-Tagabawa. Most of them are farmers who are married. They own a marginal-sized farm, and have been farming despite of the lack of training. The majority of indigenous farmers practiced "kammet" or deforestation, in which this activity is done by clearing tall trees and using tools that are made by indigenous peoples. By following these pre-planting practices, farmers were able to make their work less strenuous. In addition, "Bagobo-Tagabawa" is well-known for its root crops and fruit-bearing trees, which give farmers something to eat while they wait for their harvest .Multiple cropping is a traditional indigenous agricultural technique. Some farmers use organic manure, just like animal manure, twigs, and leaves. Farmers also stick to their traditional farming methods, they use sanggot to get rid of weeds. Before they harvest crops, there is a feast known as "Anig" this indigenous practice is typically done to thank God for their bountiful harvest. Neighbors help one another and give a portion of the harvest as payment in kind rather than cash.Item Physical characterization of coconut fruit (Cocos nucifera L.)Andallaza, Leamae B. (Davao del Sur State College, 2024-06)This study investigated the physical characteristics of Tacunan Green Dwarf (TACD) coconuts from a farm in Barangay Harada Butai, Padada, Davao del Sur. The farm spans 4 hectares, with 16-year-old trees grown at an elevation of 18 meters in clay soil. Farming practices involved fertilizer application and intercropping. Key parameters examined include major diameter, minor diameter, intermediate diameter, flesh thickness, shell thickness, geometric mean diameter, sphericity, surface area, fruit weight, shell weight, husk weight, coconut water weight, and flesh weight. A Complete Randomized Design (CRD) was used to evaluate the data using three treatments: Young coconut fruits (Treatment 1), fairly mature coconut fruits (Treatment 2), and mature coconut fruits (Treatment 3). The physical characteristics of young, fairly mature, and mature coconut fruits differ significantly (p < 0.05) according to the results of the Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) test. The mean major diameter (length) decreases as the coconut matures, wherein T1 had the highest value of 130.96 mm. T2 has the highest mean minor diameter of 116.17 mm and intermediate diameter of 117.48 mm. Flesh thickness was highest in T2 with 4.55 mm. The geometric mean diameter, sphericity, and surface area were also highest in T2, with values 119.66 mm, 0.94, and 45281.18 mm2, respectively, indicating optimal size and shape during the fairly mature stage. Weight components varied, with T2 having the highest mean fruit weight of 1075.32 g and water weight of 467.89 g, and T3 the highest flesh weight (384.82 g), while shell and husk weights were highest in T1, having values of 319.36 g and 2268.76 g respectively, and decreased with maturity. This study underscores the significant differences in the physical characteristics of coconut fruit across different maturity stages, providing essential insights into their growth and development patterns.Item Resources and infrastructure in poultry farming in Matanao, Davao del SurAlquisar, Rose Anne T. (Davao del Sur State College, 2024-05)The main focus of the study was to determine the resources and infrastructure in poultry farming. The study was conducted with 15 registered poultry farming in Matanao, Davao del Sur. The result disclosed that majority of the respondents aged 41-60 years old, males, married. The result implied that in the poultry production type, it is evident that all 15 respondents are engaged in broilers/meat production and the number of years in poultry farming, the distribution is notable for its concentration in the 8 to 10 years range, with half of the respondents falling within this category. The resources and infrastructure of the poultry farming has no significant difference between the business profile in terms of a number of farmer, thus the null hypothesis was accepted. The substantial majority (86%) rely on loans, and a smaller portion (13%) access credit through cooperatives and 93.3% of respondents reporting this as their primary source of financial support. In terms of the types of feeds used, the data indicate that all respondent (100%) rely on commercially feeds and (100%) relies on water for their poultry farming operations and the duration of water testing, all respondents, again represented by a frequency of 15 and a percentage of 100%, conducted tests for a fixed period of 1 hour only and regarding the available mode of transport, it is noteworthy that all respondents, exclusively rely on open trucks for poultry transportation.Item The value chain analysis of vegetables in Bansalan, Davao del SurSollano, John Doery L. (Davao del Sur State College, 2024-06)Several studies have shown that vegetables have high market potential and contribute substantially to household incomes and nutrition, The resurgence of vegetables' importance in human nutrition is accompanied by a need to understand the interactions among various actors in their value chain to determine ways to add value to produce and improve marketing efficiency. However, the study was conducted to determine the value chain analysis of vegetables by identifying the factors of value chain and the constraints that the vegetables farmers experienced by the vegetables farmers, the study was conducted in Bansalan, Davao del Sur but conduces only on 5 major contribute of common 5 vegetables products that consider as highest major contributor on income where as; Alegre, Balutakay, Bonifacio, Sto. Nino and Darapuay and for the vegetables where as Cabbage, carrot, bell pepper, tomato and raddish. Majority of the respondents were males, married, fall under the age gap of 31-45 years old with a high school level of educational attainment, and had a experience in farming of 11 years and above also had a income generated of 11,000-15,000. The highest mean scores, with a rating of 4.87, suggest that demand and sales analyses are frequently emphasized in the value chain analysis within the community of vegetable farmers. The demand analysis registering at 4.95 of the vegetables value chain, that the quantity of purchases is consistently very high. The highest mean rating, at 4.92, signifies that the selling price is clear and frequently noticed in the process of selling vegetables. The constraints such as credit issues, shortages of required chemicals, government policies, and intense competition with unlicensed traders are commonly observed in the vegetables value chain with a highest mean of 4.44.
